The region is known for its larger-than-life attitude, as well as its warm-heartedness and hospitality, making it truly special.
‘Phulkari’ embroidery is a traditional art form that reflects centuries of rich Punjabi culture and heritage. Sadly, this craft is at risk of extinction, as it is now practiced in only a few areas of Punjab, overshadowed by machine-made embroidery. The term "Phulkari" means “flower-embroidery,” with "phul" meaning "flower" and "kari" meaning "work." Originating in the 15th century AD, phulkari is a significant part of Punjab's vibrant culture, where village women engage in crafts to spend their time productively.
Phulkari embroidery is characterized by the use of a darn stitch on the reverse side of coarse cotton fabric with colored silk thread. This traditional craft features simple, closely packed stitches arranged in geometric patterns, with the most stunning examples called Bagh, or "flower garden." Traditionally, women in Punjab create phulkari pieces for their daughters to wear at weddings. When a daughter is born, the women gather to craft colorful patterns on coarse cloth, a process that can take years. The vibrant colors not only enhance the garment but also carry blessings from ancestors, symbolizing love and wishes for the girl. The most exclusive phulkari pieces are made without tracing and can take months to complete.
